Laura van Duren was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1959. She received her BFA with an emphasis in painting and illustration from Carnegie Mellon University. In finding her niche as an artist she has worked as a graphic designer, an art school teacher and a public health illustrator in Kenya and Costa Rica.

Laura has been working with clay for the past 20 years. Her body of work reflects her interest in experimenting with many different materials. For the past three years, she has been combing clay, metal, and wood together. The latest medium to be included is sugar. Van Duren has been creating silicone molds into which she casts sugar ladders.

Her work can be seen at Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland, CA, where she is currently represented, or by appointment in her studio. (studioappointments@lauravanduren.com)
